Evaluating Remediation Proposals for Site 5a of the 2012 Olympic Games Site
NewFields were contracted by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) to help advance progress on a problematic former landfill and industrial area targeted for re-development in preparation for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The site consisted of various alluvial layers, with significant heavy metal, petroleum hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbon contamination of soil and groundwater. The main receptor was the River Lea which was located adjacent to the Site. The development of this site had a very firm deadline, and, despite numerous investigations having been conducted on the site, decision making was difficult due to database management issues including incomplete data-sets. As such the management had a poor understanding of what the drivers for remediation were, what was required, the site conceptual model, and the costs for the current proposed remedy.
NewFields began by placing all previously collected data into a single database where it could be easily searched, investigated and understood. The data was uploaded into a GIS project that was used to analyze the data to aid in providing remedial design alternatives and value engineering. The GIS was a very important tool for communicating the environmental conditions of the Site and the rationale for the proposed remedy to all the stakeholders including representatives of the ODA, the London Development Agency, and the Environment Agency.NewFields methods of data management and data presentation allowed for a better understanding of a remediation strategy by the Environment Agency and other stakeholders.
